Joker grossed $335.5 million in the United States and Canada and $743.5 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.079 billion.[4][5] It is the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2019 and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time,[162][163] as well as the first and only R-rated film to pass the billion-dollar mark.[164] In terms of budget-to-gross ratio, Joker is also the most profitable film based on a comic book,[165] due to its small budget and little decline in week-to-week grosses during its theatrical run, surpassing the record previously held by Deadpool (2016).[166] Deadline Hollywood estimated the film made a net profit of $437 million, when factoring together all expenses and revenues.[167]
In August 2019, BoxOffice magazine analyst Shawn Robbins wrote that he expected Joker to gross $60–90 million during its opening weekend in North America.[168] Following the film's premiere, BoxOffice predicted Joker could open to $70–95 million domestically.[169] Later updating to $85–105 million, Robbins suggested it could become the first October release to open to over $100 million and surpass the record set by Venom (2018).[170] However, Comscore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian thought the film would open closer to $50 million because it is not a "typical comic-book movie".[171] Three weeks prior to its release, official industry tracking projected the film would debut to $65–80 million, with some estimates going as high as $90 million.[172] The week of its release, Atom Tickets announced pre-sale totals for the film were outpacing those of Venom and It Chapter Two ($91.1 million debut) and that Joker was its second-best-selling R-rated film of 2019 behind John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.[173]
Joker opened in 4,374 theaters in North America and made $39.9 million on its first day of release, including $13.3 million from Thursday night previews, besting Venom's respective October records.[3] The film also had the biggest October opening day of any film, beating out Halloween (2018).[174] It went on to break Venom's record for having the biggest October opening weekend, finishing with a domestic total of $96.2 million. The film set career records for Phoenix, Phillips and De Niro and was the fourth-largest debut for an R-rated film of all time.[175] The latter record would cross over The Matrix Reloaded (2003), staying behind Deadpool, Deadpool 2 (2018) and It (2017).[176] It was also Warner Bros.' biggest domestic opening in two years.[177] In its second weekend, the film fell just 41.8% to $55.9 million, remaining in first and marking the best second-weekend October total (besting Gravity (2013)'s $43.1 million in 2013).[178] It made $29.2 million in its third weekend and $19.2 million in its fourth, finishing second behind Maleficent: Mistress of Evil both times.[179][180] After 155 days, Joker's American theatrical run wrapped up on March 5, 2020, with a final gross of $355.5 million, making it the fourth-highest domestic gross for an R-rated film, behind The Passion of the Christ (2004), Deadpool and American Sniper (2014).[181]
Worldwide, the film was projected to debut to around $155 million, including $75 million from 73 overseas territories.[182] It made $5.4 million from four countries on its first day and $18.7 million from 47 in its second, for a two-day total of $24.6 million. It went on to greatly exceed expectations, making $140.5 million from overseas territories and a total $234 million worldwide. Its largest markets were South Korea (a Warner Bros. record $16.3 million), the United Kingdom ($14.8 million), Mexico ($13.1 million) and Japan ($7 million).[183] With this, it became the biggest worldwide opening for an October film.[177] During its second weekend, the film made an additional $125.7 million worldwide,[184] and $77.9 million in its third.[185] By this point, industry analysts expected Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, with some suggesting that it could finish its run with over $1 billion.[186] The film became the highest-grossing R-rated film in its fourth weekend, during which it grossed $47.8 million internationally,[187] and passed the billion-dollar mark about a month into its theatrical release.[164]

Bad Boys for Life (2020)In June 2008, Michael Bay stated that he may direct Bad Boys for Life, but that the greatest obstacle to the potential sequel would be the cost, as he and Will Smith demand some of the highest salaries in the film industry.[1] By August 2009, Columbia Pictures had hired Peter Craig to write the script for Bad Boys III.[2] In February 2011, Martin Lawrence reiterated that the film was in development.[3] In June 2014, Jerry Bruckheimer announced that screenwriter David Guggenheim was working on the storyline for the sequel.[4] Two months later, Lawrence said a script had been written and parts had been cast.[5] By June 2015, director Joe Carnahan was in early talks to write and possibly direct the film.[6] Two months later, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Bad Boys III would be released on February 17, 2017. On March 4, 2016, the film was pushed to June 2, 2017.[7] Producers had planned to begin production in early 2017.[8]
On August 11, 2016, the film was pushed back once again to January 12, 2018, to avoid box office competition with the upcoming DC Comics film Wonder Woman, and retitled Bad Boys for Life.[citation needed] Lawrence revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that filming may start in March 2017.[9] On March 7, 2017, Carnahan left the film due to scheduling conflicts,[10] and in August 2017 Sony removed the film from their release schedule.[11] In August 2017, Lawrence said that he doubted that the film would ever be made.[12] During an appearance on Australian breakfast show Sunrise on January 15, 2018, Will Smith told hosts Samantha Armytage and David Koch that a third film was coming "very soon".[13] On January 30, 2018, it was announced that Sony Pictures were in negotiations with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct the upcoming third entry in the Bad Boys franchise titled Bad Boys for Life with a possible production date in August, 2018.[14] Sony is reportedly gearing up for the long-awaited third installment to begin filming in November 2018 and wrap in March 2019.[15][16]

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)In January 2020, a fourth film entered development, with Chris Bremner serving as screenwriter. Smith and Lawrence will reprise their roles from the previous three movies.[23] In April 2022, production for the film was reportedly halted due to the incident with Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony and the subsequent investigation.[24] In February 2023, Smith announced that the fourth film was in pre-production.[25] That same month, it was reported by musician/disc jockey Questlove that Smith had to drop out of a planned surprise appearance at the 65th Grammy Awards because filming for the fourth Bad Boys film had started earlier that week.[26] Principal photography began on April 3, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia.[27] The film is due to be released in the United States on June 7, 2024.[28
In October 2017, a spinoff television series centered on Gabrielle Union's character, was announced to be in development by Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.[29] Later that month NBC ordered the pilot episode of the series.[30] By March 2018, Jessica Alba was cast as the co-star with Gabrielle Union.[31] In addition to Union, John Salley will also reprise his role as Fletcher, a computer hacker who helps Mike and Marcus in the film series.[32][33] The following month, the title of the series was revealed as LA's Finest,[34] with Jerry Bruckheimer serving as executive producer for the series. Later that month, NBC passed on the pilot, and the show was shopped around to other networks.[35] NBC's boss, Bob Greenblatt, said: "These are all tough calls. We did have an embarrassment of riches. And when we laid out the schedule and the calendar all season...it was a show that didn't fit in the grand scheme of it."[36]
That same month, it was revealed that Sony Pictures Television, was negotiating with Charter Communications about picking up the series.[37] By June 2018, Canada's Bell Media picked it up for 13 episodes.[38] Charter gave its series order on June 26, intent on making it Spectrum's first original series.[39] In June 2019, the series was renewed for the second season.
Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is introduced as a Detroit cop who, after the murder of his best friend, travels to California to investigate and track down the killer(s), whom he believes operates an art dealership as a cover in Beverly Hills. He teams up with two reluctant detectives from the Beverly Hills Police Department, Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), who were ordered to keep a watch on him, especially after seeing Foley's differing approach to police work, tactics considered unacceptable by the chief of police.
Axel returns to Beverly Hills, after finding out that Captain Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox) was shot. He once again teams up with Rosewood and Taggart, who, reluctantly and against incompetent and verbally abusive Police Chief Harold Lutz's (Allen Garfield) orders, assist Foley to find the person responsible for Bogomil's shooting. Axel, Rosewood and Taggart discover that the alphabet crimes, a series of felonies (robberies and Bogomil's shooting) that have been going on in the area, are masterminded by weapons kingpin Maxwell Dent (Jürgen Prochnow). With this information, the trio set out to find Dent and his lover, Karla Fry (Brigitte Nielsen).

Taggart has retired and a new detective, Jon Flint (Hector Elizondo), serves as Rosewood's new partner.
A fourth installment was initially announced for release in the mid-'90s, under the helm of Murphy's production company, though this never came to fruition.[7] The project was announced once again to be in development in 2006, with Bruckheimer once again serving as producer. This changed when Lorenzo di Bonaventura stepped in as producer.[8][9] After various versions of the script had undergone rewrites, Brett Ratner signed on to direct.[10][11][12][13][14][15] By July 2008, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas were hired as screenwriters to rewrite the existing script.[16][7] After the script was completed, it was decided that the story needed another rewrite.[7][17][18][19]
By October 2011, the fourth film was shelved in favor of a television series centered around Axel's son, Aaron (Brandon T. Jackson). Murphy signed on as producer for the series, citing issues with the script as the reason that the film was not being made.[20] In December 2013 after filming a pilot episode, and when CBS passed on a series order, Paramount revived Beverly Hills Cop IV. Ratner was once again hired to serve as director, with Murphy reprising the role of Axel.[21] By May 2014, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec were hired to write the screenplay.[2] The state of Michigan approved $13.5 million in film incentives, based on an estimated $56.6 million of filmmaker spending in the state. The film, intended to be shot in and around Detroit and was estimated to provide jobs for 352 workers, was originally scheduled for a March 25, 2016, release,[22] but was later pulled due to script concerns.[23][24]
In June 2016, it was announced that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were hired to replace Ratner as co-directors.[25] In September 2018, the filmmakers expressed their interest in having Tom Hardy or Channing Tatum cast in supporting roles.[26] In October 2019, Murphy announced that principal photography would commence, once Coming 2 America had finished production.[27] In November 2019, Paramount announced that they had licensed the property to be distributed by Netflix, with options for an additional sequel thereafter.[28] By May 2020, after delays in the filmmaking business caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Arbi and Fallah confirmed they are still attached and that a new screenwriter was working on a new script.[29][30] In February 2022, the film entered pre-production and received a California state tax credit of $16,059,000 total.[31] In April 2022, it was announced that Mark Molloy would replace Arbi and Fallah as director of the film.[5] In the same article, Will Beall was announced to have written the screenplay.[5] In August 2022, Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the fourth installment is set to begin filming late August-early September.[32] The same month, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige were cast.[33] In the same month, Paul Reiser and John Ashton were confirmed to reprise their roles as Det. Jeffrey Friedman and Sgt. John Taggart, respectively.[34][35] In September 2022, it was confirmed that Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot would reprise their roles as Det.
