The iPhone maker has signed a deal with ib vogt to offtake 105MWac of solar power from the Castaño Solar project in the province of Segovia, northwest of Madrid.
“Spain has developed to become a major market for solar PV, with significant opportunities for companies to benefit from low-cost, low-carbon solar power," said Anton Milner, CEO of ib vogt.
"This PPA is a perfect example, and I would like to thank all involved parties who helped make this a success and especially Apple, who are partnering with us on this project.
“We have a growing portfolio in Spain with more opportunities for corporate PPA’s through our turn-key solar projects.”
The project, with a peak capacity of 134MWp, will use bifacial solar panels on a single-axis tracker system to maximize energy production.
The solar farm is one of three projects with pay-as-produced fixed price PPAs that ib vogt is currently constructing in the province and is expected to be fully operational in December 2024.
Apple operates a total of seven data centers across the US, Denmark, and China, as well as utilizing a number of colocation sites. The company is a major Google Cloud and AWS customer. The company says all its data centers are powered by renewable energy via PPAs and other agreements.
Apple doesn’t currently operate a data center in Spain.
Founded in 2002 and majority owned by DIF Capital Partners, ib vogt has previously signed a solar PPA with Google in Spain and AirTrunk in Malaysia.
America’s billionaires got more than $2 trillion richer during the coronavirus pandemic, with their combined wealth nearly doubling over the last 19 months alone, according to a new analysis of Forbes data.
The collective fortunes of US billionaires has topped more than $5 trillion, from just short of $3 trillion in March 2020 to $5 trillion by 15 October, according to the report from Americans for Tax Fairness and the Institute for Policy Studies Program on Inequality released on 18 October.
The pandemic also has produced more than 100 new billionaires. There were 614 people in the US with 10-figure bank accounts as of March 2020, the report found. Now there are 745.

Nvidia announced plans Wednesday to acquire Israeli AI startup Run:ai. While Nvidia didn’t disclose the terms of its coming transaction, an Israeli newspaper Calcalist reported that the chipmaker will buy Run:ai for $700 million in “the coming days.”
Run:ai is a software company that essentially helps developers run their AI applications more efficiently. Founded in 2018, it today has partnerships with top tech companies including Microsoft and Amazon. Run:ai has worked with Nvidia for several years, and the acquisition will allow the AI chipmaker’s customers to use the compute power of multiple GPUs (graphics processing units) at once for separate AI applications, the company said in its announcement.
Nvidia is reportedly acquiring Run:ai for $700 million“Run:ai has been a close collaborator with NVIDIA since 2020 and we share a passion for helping our customers make the most of their infrastructure,” said Run:ai cofounder and CEO Omri Geller. “We’re thrilled to join NVIDIA and look forward to continuing our journey together.”
Nvidia is the leading supplier of graphics processing units to big tech companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Google, powering AI applications from companies’ datacenters. Nvidia’s purchase of Run:ai would be one of its biggest acquisitions since it bought Mellanox Technologies, another Israel-based business, in 2019 for $7 billion. Nvidia’s customers have also purchased a number of AI startups over the past few years, with Apple leading the pack.
Nvidia’s purchase of Run:ai also marks its growing presence in Israel, where the company already has about 4,000 employees, according to the Times of Israel.
Coming out of the most recent national lockdown, the Israel campus has slowly started to welcome back employees. There is widespread instructional signage for COVID-19 protocols, 2 meters of social distancing, no sharing of keyboards or mice at common desks and the cleaning team disinfects the spaces every night. “But, in reality, it looks pretty much the same as it would have without COVID-19,” said Rosenbaum. “Due to the thought that went into this campus, we were already most of the way to where we needed to be.”
Beyond all of the flexibility and sustainability, Microsoft was adamant that people not view the campus as an office building on the far end of a commute but, instead, a place where they connect with others in a meaningful and positive way, Gindi said. “Our ultimate goal was to create a place that people will actually miss when they’re not there.”
There are no traditional auditoriums. Instead, there are multipurpose rooms that can hold different sized events or trainings. Many of these rooms are also on the flexible grid and can be reorganized, split and merged to fit the desires of meeting organizers.
“We want to support everyone to have a better, more efficient and more vibrant work life,” said Rosenbaum. “We also have prayer rooms, playrooms and space to shoot hoops both inside and outside the building.”
With all of these approaches, Microsoft aimed to build a campus that is relevant both now and decades into the future. COVID-19 is giving the campus a stress test sooner than expected, but its design has prepared it not only for a pandemic but for a much longer-term changing nature of work.
Operational flexibility is of the upmost importance. Employees have autonomy over how they work. Desks are on rolling castors and have over 2 meters of cables, so they can be relocated without having to call building services. Rosenbaum said, “Over your 100 square meters, you can have flexibility to organize and personalize your space: put your desks face-to-face or back-to-back, far apart or whatever is right for you. This makes social distancing easier.”
Employees can always find a change of scenery without having to leave the building. All areas offer window views. Acoustic partitions can be added as necessary and shelving systems between groups can be removed so that two teams can combine into one or divide into two sub-teams. This is called the “flexible grid.”
one of the world’s leading chip makers, announced on Monday that it was developing the most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer in Israel – in order to meet the rising demand for AI in the country.
The Israeli supercomputer, which has been named Israel-1, is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to fully develop and will be partly operational by the end of 2023, according to Nvidia.
The cloud-based system will deliver performance of up to eight exaflops of AI computing and is hoping to be one of the most powerful AI supercomputers ever built.
Nvidia said it was boosting supply to meet the surging demand for its AI chips and has forecasted second-quarter revenue more than 50% above initial Wall Street estimates, Reuters reported.
The new development comes as Nvidia is gearing up to be welcomed as the first US chipmaker in the trillion-dollar club, after its shares rose 3.8% in trading on Tuesday. The company is currently valued at $998bn.
According to Gilad Shainer, senior vice president at Nvidia, the company has collaborated with tens of thousands of software engineers a
Nvidia expects the Israeli supercomputer project to be ready by the end of 2023, in the hopes of meeting surging AI demand.Shainer claimed that AI was the “most important technology in our lifetime”, emphasising the need to develop AI and generative AI applications large graphics processing units (GPUs), Reuters reported.
Shainer made it clear that Nvidia’s Israeli partners were the company’s priority for the supercomputer, stating that the system could be used with partners outside of Israel in the future.
Israel-1 is being developed by the former Mellanox team. Mellanox Techonolgies, the Israeli chip designer, was bought by Nvidia in 2019.
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) were central to the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Microsoft invested billions of dollars in Nvidia, as it needed thousands of Nvidia GPUs to train its popular ChatGPT application with masses of information.
Israel-1’s announcement comes shortly after Grace, a supercomputer in Bristol. The chip maker partnered up with Bristol University to create the computer called Isambard 3.
According to Nvidia, the supercomputer in Bristol will assist in scientific research including drug discovery and climate change.
Grace CPU began to be shipped by Nvidia earlier this year.
